Our Journey with Glific: Looking Back and Moving Forward

Glific was started in May 2020. Our goal was simple: to help NGOs digitally connect with the people they serve, easily, affordably and at scale. There were already WhatsApp communication tools on the market, but they weren’t open-source, budget-friendly or met the specific needs for non-profits.

Check out our kickoff blog post here.

If you’re interested in learning more about our early work, these blogs are a good place to start:

Building Glific Together

From the start, we have built Glific with feedback from multiple NGOs. We focused on common needs so we could create a tool that lots of organizations could benefit from. Thanks to our awesome early partners (SOL, TAP, and Dost Education) for sharing their ideas and trying out early versions of Glific!

Learning and Growing

In August 2020, we released our very first workable version. Looking back, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come! Some of the features we thought would be popular actually aren’t used much now.

By September 2020, we’d improved Glific and added “flows” (we used to call them “Automation”). Even this version looks pretty basic now!

Glific Version 1 and Beyond

Our official version 1 launch was in March 2021. It included features we still use today – flows, templates and simulator etc. You can read more from the announcement blog here.

Since then, we’ve been busy! We’ve added features and tried to make everything fit into our existing structure. I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but here’s a quick list of what we’ve been up to:

Moving to a new look

As we added more and more features, we realized it was time to make Glific more easier to navigate and use. We worked with our design team to come up with a new, cleaner look.

Stay tuned for another blog post soon, where I’ll share more about our design ideas and the changes we’re making!
