A Legacy of Learning, a Future of Possibilities
For more than 35 years, India Literacy Project (ILP) has been walking alongside communities across India, making education not just a privilege for a few but a pathway for all. Its work touches lives in three simple but powerful ways:

·  Schooling – enabling enrollment and ensuring retention of children in schools.

·  Learning – providing access to libraries, experiential science education, and new-age learning opportunities.

·  Earning – equipping youth with skills through career development, vocational training, and ICT programs.

At the center of it all are first-generation learners—children who often have no one at home to guide them through choices like which subjects to pick or how to prepare for careers. For them, education is both an opportunity and an unknown journey.

The COVID Turning Point
When the pandemic shut classrooms, ILP faced a tough question: How do we keep guiding students when we can’t be physically present?

Until then, ILP facilitators had visited schools to spark conversations about careers—from medicine to teaching to engineering. These were often the only chances for first-generation learners to understand what was possible. With schools closed, those opportunities disappeared.

Enter Glific: A Chatbot that Became a Mentor
ILP turned to Glific, an open-source WhatsApp-based chatbot, to bridge the gap. Suddenly, career guidance was no longer tied to a classroom—it was available anytime, anywhere, in a student’s own language.

Here’s how it changed the game:

  • Always Accessible: Whether late at night after chores or between study breaks, students could explore career options with a simple WhatsApp message.
  • Clarity on Pathways: For instance, many discovered that pursuing medicine meant choosing science in high school—information they might otherwise have missed.
  • Scalable Reach: One WhatsApp number allowed ILP to reach thousands of students across states simultaneously.
  • Multi-Language Support: With ILP’s footprint across 10+ states, the chatbot is being scaled to work in multiple languages, ensuring inclusivity.
  • Rooted in Communities: Volunteers in ILP’s libraries and community spaces guide students in using the chatbot, making career awareness part of daily learning.

More Than Tech—A Bridge to Hope
For first-generation learners, this is not just a chatbot; it’s a lifeline. By integrating tools like psychometric tests, it helps students connect their strengths and interests to real career options—turning vague dreams into concrete plans.

The impact has been remarkable: to date, the chatbot has reached more than 31,000 students across India. Students are more confident in their choices, parents are more engaged, and families see a clearer path to stability and growth.

Looking Ahead
Reaching 31,000 learners is only the beginning. ILP’s vision is to ensure that every child—no matter how remote their village or limited their resources—has access to guidance to dream boldly and pursue those dreams with confidence. By expanding the chatbot across more states, adding languages, and embedding it in community spaces like libraries and Gram Panchayats, ILP is making career awareness a right, not a privilege.

In a world where information gaps decide who gets ahead, ILP is proving that technology, when rooted in empathy and community, can level the playing field and unlock human potential. For learners everywhere, this is more than guidance—it’s the bridge from aspiration to achievement.
