Key Education Foundation (KEF), a nonprofit based in Bangalore, works to enhance the quality of early childhood education (ECE) delivered through government systems. With a focus on improving classroom experiences, empowering teachers, and engaging parents, KEF takes a holistic approach to early learning.

One of their standout efforts is their work with CLAP (Children Learning, Assisted by Parents), an initiative designed to bring learning into homes—especially through parents.

Why Parents Matter in Early Education

At KEF, the team believes that parents play a pivotal role in a child’s early development. They are not only the child’s first teachers but also critical stakeholders in what happens inside the classroom. Recognizing this, KEF developed a three-vertical framework for their work:

  1. Curriculum
  2. Teachers
  3. Parents

As part of this strategy, KEF set out to explore how parents could be more meaningfully involved in their child’s learning at home—especially through playful, developmentally appropriate practices.

The Birth of CLAP During the Pandemic

CLAP was born as a response to the COVID-19 crisis, when schools were shut and children were confined to their homes. Parents, unsure of how to keep their children engaged, needed support—and KEF saw an opportunity.

Since WhatsApp was widely accessible (over 80–90% of families had access to at least one smartphone), KEF began sharing simple activity ideas through WhatsApp messages. These activities were aligned to early learning outcomes and designed for easy parent-child interaction at home.

From humble beginnings with text-based learning in English, Maths, and SEL (Social and emotional learning)), CLAP has now evolved—becoming a structured, interactive, and more responsive program for parents.

Evolution Through Feedback

As the program developed, KEF noticed several insights that helped shape the future of CLAP:

  • Short, focused messages performed better than lengthy texts or videos.
  • Parents had high aspirations for their children but needed guidance on recognizing true learning indicators (beyond reciting poems or memorizing content).
  • There was a demand for “homework,” but KEF redefined it as quality time spent learning through play.
  • Parents responded positively to rewards, like certificates or progress trackers, boosting participation and word-of-mouth sharing.

Technology as an Enabler – Glific Chatbot

Using Glific, KEF integrated WhatsApp chatbot to make parent interactions more engaging and scalable. The team learned to design and iterate message flows, test content, and use real-time feedback to improve. This user-led design approach allowed them to stay agile and responsive.

Parents could now:

  • Receive fun, age-appropriate learning activities
  • Ask questions about their child’s development
  • Track their progress over time

The vision is to build a lightweight, mobile-first support system that parents can access any time—something that encourages quality, playful engagement with their children at home.

What’s Next?

CLAP has opened systemic doors for KEF’s engagement with government departments, proving that tech can go directly into the hands of parents. However, there’s still much to explore:

  • Deepening product fit: Understanding diverse parent needs better
  • Interactive features: Providing real-time answers or nudges based on parent queries
  • Localized support: Customizing content for language, context, and family environment

The Long-Term Vision

Ultimately, KEF envisions a future where every parent has a trusted digital companion—a simple, engaging tool on their phone that offers:

  • Age-appropriate learning activities
  • Guidance for managing emotions and routines
  • Fun, developmentally sound interactions
  • A sense of agency in their child’s learning journey

Getting there will take time, iteration, and collaboration, but the direction is clear: equipping parents to become confident learning partners at home.
